Points

  • The trial’s main goal was to measure the efficacy of using the polypill strategy compared to usual care in patients with myocardial infarction within the last 6 months.
  • The trial results indicated that using a polypill strategy (statin, ACE inhibitor, and aspirin) is beneficial for preventing adverse cardiovascular events.
  • Significantly higher medicational effectiveness was seen in polypill strategic groups in comparison to the group of usual care.

Summary

The research was carried out to measure the effectiveness of the polypill strategy compared to usual care in patients with myocardial infarction within the last 6 months. For this purpose, a parallel and randomized study was designed in a 1:1 fashion. For this trial study, 2499 patients with myocardial infarction with 75.8 years of mean age were selected for the follow-up duration of 3 years. Randomization of patients was done into two groups a polypill group with 1258 patients and a usual care group with 1241 patients.

Patients having at least one of the following: chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, stroke, coronary revascularization with a prior history of myocardial infarction above 65 years of age were included.

The results indicated that myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death, urgent revascularization, or stroke rate is reduced in the group of polypill strategy in comparison to the group of usual care. These results remain consistent across all subgroups. The rate of all-cause mortality was almost the same in both treatment groups. Significantly higher medicational effectiveness was seen in polypill strategic groups in comparison to the group of usual care.
