Points

  • 587,330 U.S. patients under the National COVID Cohort Collaborative study were examined for links between COVID-19 post-recovery and the development of de novo heart failure
  • 10,979 heart failure events were recorded after about a year of median follow-up
  • COVID-19 hospitalization was found to be linked to a higher hazard of incident heart failure; these effects were more pronounced in younger patients, White patients, and patients with known cardiovascular disease history

Summary

To investigate the related events surrounding COVID-19 post-recovery and the development of de novo heart failure, the post-recovery outcomes of 587,330 patients from the United States were examined. The data was obtained from the National COVID Cohort Collaborative study; 257,075 were with COVID-19, while 330,255 were without.

From these points, it was noted that patients who were hospitalized with COVID-19 were generally older (51 years old vs. 46 years old); these COVID-19 patients were also often male (49% vs. 42%) and less often White (61% vs. 69%).

After some 367 days of median follow-up, a total of 10,979 incident heart failure events were recorded. It was here that, after adjustments, it was determined that COVID-19 hospitalization was linked to a higher hazard of incident heart failure (45%; HR = 1.45; 95% CI: 1.39-1.51). These links were found to be more pronounced with younger patients (Pinteraction = 0.003), White (Pinteraction = 0.005), or those who had a known cardiovascular disease history (Pinteraction = 0.005).

Overall, it was found that COVID-19 hospitalization was associated with a higher risk of incident heart failure.
